When should a student take the PSAT and SAT tests?
Creating a Test Taking Plan
Most college admissions officers will tell you that from spring of junior year through the fall of senior year students should be focusing all their attention on college. This means that students should start thinking about where they would like to apply and start making the all-important college visits. One important component of an overall solid college admissions plan is having a solid test plan. Two key questions will need to be answered in order to develop the plan: Which tests should I take and when do I take them?
Most colleges require either the SAT or the ACT (although there is a growing number of colleges that no longer require standardized tests, see our resources page for a link to a list of these colleges). Then, depending on the colleges where a student is applying, it may be necessary to also take the SAT II. Two or three SAT II's (it varies depending on the school) are required at most competitive colleges, such as Ivy League schools, Trinity, Connecticut College, Wesleyan, Tufts, MIT, and a number of other competitive institutions. Parents may know the SAT II as the old Achievement tests. The SAT II's test your knowledge in a specific subject. Each test is 60-minutes, and you can take up to three tests in one sitting. You can take the SAT II in a variety of subject areas, such as Math I or II, English Literature, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Foreign Languages, U.S. History, or World History. Since they test your knowledge in a specific subject it is best to take these tests at the end of the year when the student is actually enrolled in that subject, as all the knowledge will be fresh in the student's mind. For most students this means that they should take the SAT II in June. However, if a student is enrolled in AP courses and has to take the AP exams, then she may consider taking the SAT II's in May. That will be the same week as the AP exams, but all the information will be fresh in her head and the SAT II's are actually easier than the AP exams.
PSAT test:
- Often taken inspring of sophomore year,and/or in the fall of junior year.
- PSAT scores do NOT go to colleges, but are used in determining whether or not a student is eligible for a National Merit Scholarship.
SAT test:
- Taken in the student'sjunior and senior years.
- We recommend the student take it at least once (twice is even better) in the winter/spring of their junior year (tests are in January, March, May and June), and can take it again in the fall of senior year (Oct and Nov).
- We recommend a student take it twice in the spring if he is prepared because the fall gets hectic with college applications.
- You should take the SAT no more than three times. All scores will be sent to the schools where a student applies.
SAT II tests:
- Also known as subject tests, these are required for many of the more competitive schools.
- You can find out if a school requires the subject tests by checking the admissions requirement on their website or calling the school. Usually a more competitive school will require 2 or 3 subject tests.
- Students should take these inJune of their junior year, or while the student is enrolled in the subject of the test he plans to take (ie. Biology, Chemistry, French, etc.).
ACT test:
- Generally the ACT follows a similar schedule to the SAT in that students will take theACT in their junior year.
- Often students will take the ACT and SAT in the same season but different months to see which they score better on, but some students will take the ACT after they have received a score on the SAT they were unhappy with.
- ACT scores don't automatically go to schools so there is no harm in trying the ACT. It is usually not worth it for students to take the ACT more than twice.
Things to Consider When Deciding Which Tests To Take

- Are you applying early to any schools?

I'm not an official spokesperson so you'll have to ask someone from financial aid to offer you an official response, but from what I understand the TEACH grant helps pay for the college debt that a future teacher can incur. In return for government help, you're supposed to teach a failing school that requires hard-working teachers for 4 years.I say you might as well do it if you are planning on being a teacher, because paying for student loans can be really expensive and could take years.
I would want to make sure that you understand exactly how much the government grant will pay off. Just be sure you know what you're getting into.

You could potentially take the grant out (as long as you are enrolled in a college that even offers the grant and if your degree is in education) but you will NOT meet the requirements of grant after graduation.The grant can only stay a grant if you teach in a high need field in a high need school district. Health science does not count as a high need field. When they say they need science teachers they mean the hard sciences such as Chemistry and Physics.
I would not even go near this grant unless you have always dreamed of being a math or chemistry teacher in an urban school district. There are too many strings attached to this grant to risk taking it out, hence the reason most colleges are not even willing to offer the opportunity to their students.

You learn : ear wash , eye wash, vision exam, autoclaving, bandaging, hearing tests, med dosages, setting up sterile trays, assisting & draping, vital signs, EKGs, finger sticks for glucose, hemoglobin, charting, etc. 2 modules are about front office procedures (computers, ledgers, booking etc) and 2 mods are anatomy & pathophysiology (disease). You learn about cells, the skeleton, etc. Hard depends entirely on you.

Medical assists are subject to random drug testing. If drug use is detected, you could be kicked out of the program. It is just not while you are in school either. Once on the job, you will be subjected to random drug testing too. Get caught, you are out of a job. Drug tests now can detect marijuana use within the last 90 days; no mater how much water, vinegar, or green tea you drink. Same goes for eating a lot of poppy seeds - won't fool the drug test.

I would definitely suggest going to your local community, technical or vocational school. They are WAY less than the private for profit schools, they teach the same curriculum, their credits are transferable and most offer online classes.If you are set on an online only program, there are only 3 I'd recommend, either CareerStep or the online programs offered by AAPC and AHIMA.
Just an FYI, this field has quickly become over saturated with new grads and most employers are only hiring employees who have at least 2 years experience. When you read about coding shortages, they mostly mean there is a shortage of experienced and certified coders. So once you gain the necessary experience, there are usually a fair amount of jobs to chose from.
But until you get that experience, it can be hard to find a job. It is generally the advice to try to get a job elsewhere in HIM. If you can, try to find a HIM job in a hospital. That way you can gain experience and network. Most hospitals prefer to hire from within, so already being an employee will give you an advantage

So many people want to work from home, and the number has probably triped or more because of the recession, that job seekers for this type probably outnumber the available jobs by 1,000 to 1. Don't count on getting a job like this.What I would suggest instead is looking for what skills he has which he could offer as his own business from home. Programming? Web design? Graphics work? Consulting? Marketing? The difference is, he would have to market himself and find his own work, instead of having his work and paycheck handed to him by someone else.

Yes! The college just says ....... take out a loan. And off you go to college. Worse, you take out a loan 'per semester'. You can easily graduate with 8 student loans. Some can be consolidated into one. Others, you are stuck with. I know people with three loan payments a month for their college bill. It is all a scam. Colleges are growing into an 'experience', instead of just the 'basic education'. This means fancy dorms, rock-climbing walls. gourmet cafeterias. These all cost $$$$. Kids today want fancy. And as long as the college has a steady supply of anyone with a check, they will continue to spend to meet student wishes. In many colleges, it is a 'keeping up with the Jones mentality'. One college lost enrollment. They were the lowest cost in a 5 county area. Their solution? Increase tuition. Enrollment shot up 15%! No worry. Just bill the student loans. Example, when I went to college one weeks minimum wage job covered the cost of one 3 hr class. Today, one weeks minimum wage job covers one credit hour!

Some colleges (mostly state schools) have tuition waivers for students in neighboring states if they have certain grades, test scores, ect. The only way you can find out is by going to the school's (Clemson) financial aid website and seeing if they offer a tuition waiver and if you qualify.

I have quite a few interests in the HE realm: development, advancement, first year students, international students, registrar, admissions, etc. I like academic advising, but after working with international students at my alma mater and volunteering to mentor high school students applying to college, I've decided that if I pursue academic advising I really only want to work with first year/first generation and international students. Upper division students get a little jaded and are less in need of the actual advising unless they're doing an internship. I like helping students figure out their interests.
That being said, I like the development and marketing aspect of HE as well. I love promoting HE to anyone who will listen, and I currently work as a grant writer for a development office of a nonprofit organization. I would really enjoy continuing this kind of work in HE as a grants/contracts professional, research analyst, dean of development, etc.

Hello, I actually know somebody who is in the same situation as you and has elected to pursue a degree as a physician assistant (and starts school in less than a week!). I would contact programs that you are interested in and talk to them. PA programs typically take about 2 years to complete after getting a bachelors degree. It is very possible to go to school for less than 100,000 dollars. While this may seem like a lot, earning potential is much higher for physician assistants (,000) than nurses (i believe less than ,000 a year). Medical assistants make approximately an hour.
